DESCRIPTION

The Mezzabarba Custom Amplification BlueStorm is an Eric Steckel signature analogue overdrive and distortion pedal designed to deliver the focused, powerful character associated with his blues-rock and high-gain guitar sound. It can provide the main drive sound in front of a clean amplifier, act as a dedicated lead voice or add further weight and saturation to an amplifier that is already beginning to break up. Its broad gain range makes it suitable for blues, blues-rock, classic rock, hard rock, modern rock and metal. Although primarily voiced for electric guitar, it can also be used by bass players who want a dense, mid-focused distortion sound rather than a completely neutral or full-range drive.

The BlueStorm has a full and concentrated voice with substantial low-mid body, a firm attack and enough upper-frequency detail to keep individual notes clear. At lower Gain settings, it produces a warm and expressive overdrive that adds thickness without making the instrument sound distant or overly compressed. Increasing the Gain brings greater saturation, harmonic complexity and sustain, moving into a powerful distortion sound that remains articulate. Chords retain useful separation, single-note lines have a strong centre and sustained notes develop rich overtones rather than becoming indistinct. Its pronounced low mids help the instrument sit confidently in a mix, while the controlled response prevents the sound from becoming hollow, loose or excessively sharp.

The pedal feels immediate and responsive under the fingers. Changes in picking strength affect the attack, saturation and harmonic content, giving the player more control than a heavily compressed distortion circuit. A lighter touch produces a cleaner and more restrained response, while firmer playing introduces additional drive and emphasis. This dynamic behaviour contributes to the feel of a driven valve amplifier and allows expressive phrasing to remain intact throughout the Gain control’s range. The pedal also responds well to changes from the instrument’s volume control, pickup selection and playing position, encouraging the player to shape the sound directly from the guitar or bass.

Its three-control layout keeps adjustment quick and intuitive. Gain sets the amount of overdrive and distortion, moving from warm, responsive break-up to sustained high-gain sounds. Tone adjusts the overall brightness, upper-mid presence and attack, allowing the pedal to be balanced with different pickups, instruments, amplifiers and speakers. Lower settings smooth the upper frequencies and can help control a bright amplifier, while higher settings add definition and presence to a darker rig. Level controls the output volume, making it possible to match the bypassed signal, push the front end of an amplifier or create a deliberate volume increase for lead parts. The controls offer a useful range without menus, secondary functions or internal adjustments, making the pedal easy to set up during rehearsals, recording sessions and performances.

At the centre of the BlueStorm is Mezzabarba’s High Dynamic Multistage Op-Amp circuit. The signal passes through multiple gain stages to create progressive saturation, sustain and harmonic detail while preserving a clear attack. High-quality hi-fi and military-specification components are used throughout, with full-size through-hole parts rather than surface-mounted components. This design supports consistent performance, low noise and dependable operation while helping the pedal retain a fluid, full-bodied response. The BlueStorm is entirely engineered and built in Italy.

The circuit is protected by a sturdy all-metal enclosure designed for regular rehearsal, recording and live use. Its compact footprint takes up little more space than a conventional single-footswitch drive pedal, while the controls remain easy to reach when it is installed on a working pedalboard. The enclosure protects the internal components, switches and connections during transport and everyday use, and its substantial construction helps the pedal remain stable underfoot.

A deep blue finish gives the BlueStorm a distinctive but restrained appearance. Bold white lettering identifies each control clearly, while the large BlueStorm name and Mezzabarba branding remain easy to read from standing height. The strong contrast between the blue enclosure, white graphics and white control knobs helps settings remain visible under changing stage lighting. Eric Steckel’s signature and additional Mezzabarba graphics complete the pedal’s visual design without making the working surface feel cluttered.

A dedicated red Active LED provides immediate confirmation that the effect is engaged. Its clear position on the top panel makes the pedal’s status easy to check during rehearsals and performances, even under low or changing stage lighting.

The high-quality true-bypass footswitch removes the effect circuit from the signal path when the BlueStorm is switched off. This helps preserve the instrument’s direct sound and signal integrity, avoiding unnecessary processing when the pedal is not in use. The single-switch arrangement is familiar, uncomplicated and easy to operate on stage.

The input and output jack sockets are mounted on the right and left sides of the enclosure, following the conventional pedalboard signal direction and making cable routing straightforward. The 9V DC connection is positioned centrally along the top edge, keeping the power cable away from the footswitch and audio connections. The BlueStorm requires a regulated 9V DC power supply rated at 30mA or more, using a 2.1mm centre-negative connector.

The BlueStorm is covered by a two-year manufacturer warranty, subject to the conditions stated by Mezzabarba. This provides additional confidence in its construction and long-term reliability for musicians using the pedal at home, in the studio or on stage.

The Mezzabarba BlueStorm stands out through its combination of thick low-mid weight, sustained harmonic drive and responsive playing feel. It offers enough gain for modern rock and metal while retaining the definition and touch sensitivity needed for expressive blues, rhythm and lead playing. For guitarists seeking a direct and powerful overdrive or distortion with simple controls and a clear tonal identity, and for bass players who want a concentrated, mid-rich drive texture, it is a dependable and purposeful addition to a rig.

CONTROLS
