The Vahlbruch FX 6-PHI-4 is a pure analogue multi-stage phaser designed for guitarists and bass players who want classic phase movement with greater depth and control than a typical vintage circuit. A two-position Stages switch changes the signal path between four-stage and six-stage phasing, allowing the pedal to cover restrained rhythm modulation, broad psychedelic sweeps and deeper textures approaching Uni-Vibe and rotary-speaker territory. It works equally well as a subtle source of movement for clean passages or as a more prominent modulation effect placed before or after overdrive.
In four-stage mode, the 6-PHI-4 produces the smooth, open sweep associated with classic script-logo phasers. The movement is warm and clearly defined without placing a heavy tonal layer over the instrument. Six-stage mode introduces additional depth and a stronger sense of rotation, extending the sound towards pulsing Uni-Vibe textures and Leslie-inspired movement. Chords remain easy to distinguish, lead lines retain their attack, and the natural character of the instrument and amplifier remains present beneath the modulation.
The pedal responds naturally to different playing techniques and gain settings. Lower Intensity positions add gentle motion without distracting from the performance, while stronger settings produce a deeper, more vocal sweep. Slow speeds create broad movement suited to sustained chords and spacious arrangements, while faster settings introduce a pronounced pulse that works well for funk, psychedelic rock and rotating-speaker-style sounds. Its low background noise also makes it suitable for recording and for placement in more complex pedalboard signal chains.
Speed controls the rate of the modulation across a wide range, while Intensity adjusts the strength and depth of the phase effect. The separate Volume control sets the overall output level and can also provide a useful boost, helping players compensate for perceived level changes or push the following amplifier or drive pedal slightly harder. The controls are straightforward to understand, making the 6-PHI-4 quick to adjust during rehearsals, recording sessions and live performances.
At the centre of the circuit is a carefully matched set of new-old-stock 2N5952 JFET transistors. The pedal uses four transistors in its four-stage setting and all six in its deeper six-stage mode. Matching these components closely produces a smooth and consistent modulation curve while helping to keep unwanted noise low. The result is an organic analogue phase sound that remains even throughout the sweep rather than becoming harsh or unbalanced at particular points.
Switching is handled by Vahlbruch’s MagTraB Magnetic Transducer Button. Instead of relying on a conventional mechanical audio switch, the footswitch contains a magnet whose movement is detected by a sensor inside the pedal. A microcontroller then operates a gold-plated relay to change the audio path. This contactless arrangement provides smooth, quiet operation and is designed to withstand millions of switching cycles, making it well suited to frequent stage and studio use.
The pedal’s power-up behaviour can be configured to start either engaged or bypassed. This is particularly useful for players using pedalboard switching systems or rigs that need to return to a predictable state whenever the power is connected. Relay-controlled true bypass preserves the direct signal when the effect is disengaged, while the 1 MΩ input impedance provides an appropriate load for passive guitar and bass pickups. Its low 100 Ω output impedance helps drive longer cables and following pedals without unnecessary signal loss.
A continuously pulsating LED follows the modulation rate, providing a clear visual reference before the effect is engaged and making precise tempo-related adjustments easier under stage lighting. A separate status indicator confirms whether the phaser is active. The blue textured finish, large cream controls and high-contrast graphics make each function easy to identify while giving the pedal a distinctive but practical pedalboard appearance.
The compact metal enclosure protects the analogue circuit during rehearsals, transport and regular performances without occupying unnecessary pedalboard space. Input and output sockets are placed on the sides, while the pedal is powered from an external regulated 9V DC centre-negative supply. Battery operation is not supported, and a power supply is not included. Current consumption is approximately 40 mA, allowing the 6-PHI-4 to operate comfortably from most quality isolated pedalboard power supplies.
Handmade in Germany, the Vahlbruch FX 6-PHI-4 combines the familiar movement of a traditional four-stage phaser with the greater depth and rotating character of a six-stage circuit. Its carefully matched analogue components, useful output control, visible rate indication and durable MagTraB switching make it a flexible and dependable modulation pedal for players who want vintage-inspired sounds without vintage limitations.
